Qualifying for Title I Loan Forgiveness
To qualify for a Title I loan forgiveness program you should teach full-time for five years in a row in schools that serve low-income families. The highest level of forgiveness will be rewarded to those who also teach as math, science, or special education teachers in these Title I Schools.
What is the Stafford Loan?
The Stafford Loan (FFEL) is a loan that is not based on income or credit levels. This loan is intended to be a supplement to other loans, grants, or money that you may have. The Stafford loan has a low fixed interest rate, high borrowing limits, and no payments are due while you are still enrolled in school. To apply for the Stafford Loan, fill out a FAFSA form and send it to the school you are enrolled in (or plan to enroll in). Your school will review it will let you know what you qualify for.
What is the TEACH Grant?
The TEACH Grant or Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education is a grant program that was created by the College Cost Reduction and Access Act of 2007. This grant provides college assistance of up to $4,000 per year to anyone who will teach in a public or private school that serves students from low-income families.
Receiving a TEACH Grant
To receive a TEACH Grant agree to work as a full-time teacher in a high-need field in a school that serves low-income students. You must do this for for four full years out of an eight year period.
TEACH Grant Requirements
The requirements to receive a TEACH Grant are as follows:
- Submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
- Be enrolled as an undergraduate, post-baccalaureate, or graduate student in a post secondary educational institution that participates in the TEACH Grant program.
- Sign the TEACH Grant Agreement to Serve.
- Stay enrolled in a program or classes that fit the requirements for a career in teaching.
- Meet academic achievement requirements (such base, scoring at or above the 75th percentile on a college admissions test or maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25).
- Be a U.S. Citizen or eligible non-citizen.
What is a Pell Grant?
A Pell Grant is a federal college grant that does not need to be repaid ever. These grants are usually only given to undergraduate students who haven't yet earned a bachelors or other degree.
To apply for the Pell Grant, first fill out a FAFSA form and meet all of the necessary requirements for receiving the grant. Grant amounts will be dependent on the student's expected family contribution (EFC), their full cost of attendance, the student's current enrollment status (meaning full or part time), as well as whether or not the student has plans of attending for a full academic year or less.
